Unclaimed Moneys Act ( Interactive briefing session )
The Accountant General was appointed as the Registrar of Unclaimed moneys on 1st June 1975.
Who must comply with Unclaimed Moneys Act 1965
  • Companies including foreign companies incorporated under the Companies Act 1965;
  • The governing Board established to manage funds relating to retirement benefits;
  • Registered societies and cooperatives societies;
  • Corporations, public authorities and trade unions;
  • Firms i.e. persons associated together to carry out business.
What are Unclaimed Moneys

Moneys which are legally payable to the owner and have remained unpaid for a period of not less than one year after they become payable:-

  1. salaries, bonuses and commissions;
  2. dividends and profits declared for distributions;
  3. insurance claims which have been approved for payment;
  4. bank draft, cashier’s order and other documents of similar nature whose validity period have lapsed;
  5. fixed deposits (without automatic renewal instructions) which have matured;
  6. deposits for which the intended purpose has been fulfilled.

Moneys in the credit of an account which is not transacted by the owners for a period of not less than seven (7) years including:

  • Saving account
  • Current account
  • Fixed Deposit (with automatic renewal instructions)

Moneys in the credit of a trading account which is not transacted for a period of not less than two (2) years including creditor/Debtor.

Refund of Unclaimed Moneys

In general the following documents are required to be submitted to the Registrar office by the applicant:-

  • A copy of UMA -7 form, duly completed and signed;
  • The original document showing ownership of the moneys to be claimed, e,g. bank book, fixed deposit certificate and dividend warrant. If the original document is not available/lost, a letter of confirmation from the entity who lodged the unclaimed money is required; and
  • Photocopy of the identity card of the applicant
For application of deceased’s moneys, a copy of the Letter of Administration is required to be submitted as proof that the applicant has a legal right over the moneys to be claimed.

The amount of unclaimed moneys to be refunded by the Registrar will be the amount of moneys lodged by the entity without any charge or interest accrued on the moneys received.
